BECON (Black Minority Ethnic Community Organisations Network) is a region wide organisation for the Black Minority Ethnic (BME) voluntary and community sector in the North East of England.

BECON provides services to BME communities addressing disadvantage, discrimination, exclusion, inequalities and racism. Services are geared to support individuals to participate more fully and inclusively in the economic, social and cultural developments of their localities. BECON strives to bring about a more inclusive society promoting equality, diversity, human rights and social justice.

Tackle discrimination and improve services PDF Print E-mail
The NE Equalities Coalition is supporting a workshop led by the Equality and Human Rights Commission, focussing on how people, groups and organisations in the community can make use of human rights to tackle discrimination and improve services. The event is in Northumberland, though relevant to a wider audience, and includes an update from the County Council and Health Trust on their approach and progress so far on fulfilling the Equality Duty.

Environmental play area reduces bullying PDF Print E-mail

An innovative new natural play area trialled at a Glasgow primary school has been hailed as a remarkable success, with a 94% reduction in accidents and bullying since its introduction in 2009.

It allows children a natural space with hills, valleys, willow tunnels and a rope bridge – and has already illustrated that engagement with natural spaces has a positive impact on learning and wellbeing.

In November 2011, the Migration Policy Group published country reports on measures to combat discrimination in 2010.


The reports were drafted for the European Network of Legal Experts in the non-discrimination field (on the grounds of Race or Ethnic origin, Age, Disability, Religion or belief and Sexual Orientation), established and managed by the Migration Policy Group and Human European Consultancy.

They were produced as part of a study into measures to combat discrimination in the EU Member States, funded by the European Community Programme for Employment and Social Solidarity – PROGRESS (2007-2013).
