DIVERGENCE IN PUBLIC POLICY BETWEEN ENGLAND AND SCOTLAND: WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR VOLUNTEERING? PDF Print E-mail

Date : Wednesday 7th November,

Time: 12.15pm - 3.00pm

Venue: Squires Cinema, Squires Building, University of Northumbria, Newcastle-upon-Tyne

You are invited to a seminar organised by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), the Institute for Volunteering Research (IVR) and Northumbria University entitled ‘Divergence in public policy between England and Scotland: what does this mean for volunteering?’ This seminar is free to attend but places are limited and registration is required.
Over the past decade, we have seen more and more decision-making powers relating to civil society devolved to the four national governments, and moved away from Westminster. While the ways in which civil society organisations operate in these evolving policy contexts have received increasing attention, there has been relatively limited discussion of the place of volunteering and how it is being affected. This seminar seeks to address this gap with particular reference to Scotland and England; the two countries where this divergence is arguably at its starkest.
We will be asking what this means for organisations that support and involve volunteers, and for volunteers themselves?
The purpose of the seminar is to investigate a number of questions including:

·        What are the ideological differences and similarities between the two governments in how volunteering is understood and valued, and what does this mean for individual volunteers and those organisations involving them?

·        How does the supply and demand of volunteering opportunities vary between the two countries, are there geographical and cultural variations emerging, and to what extent is this influenced by differing government policy?

·        To what extent are the policy agendas of the two governments favouring certain types – formal or informal – of volunteering, or certain fields of activity, over others?

·        What is the relationship between volunteering and government policy?
